چکیده
A detailed analysis is performed of the plastic deformation in a metal substrate fretted by a ̄atbottomed circular peg under steady normal load and cyclic tangential load. The substrate is coated with a thin layer of soft metal. Two limiting asymptotic problems are identi®ed which characterize small scale yielding behavior in the substrate in the vicinity of the corners of the peg. Deformation within the plastic zone is characterized, including regions of elastic shakedown, steady reversed cyclic plastic straining, and strain ratchetting. Implications for nucleation of fretting cracks are discussed. # 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a stochastic model of fatigue crack propagation in ductile alloys that are commonly encountered in mechanical structures and machine components of complex systems (e.g. aircraft, spacecraft, ships and submarines, and power plants). The stochastic model is built upon a deterministic state-space model of fatigue crack propagation under variable-amplitude loading. The (non-stat...

We study thermal crack shielding and thermal shock damage in a double-edge cracked metal-particlereinforced ceramic matrix composite subjected to sudden cooling at the cracked surfaces. Under severe thermal shocks, the crack will grow but will be bridged by the plastically stretched metal particles. A linear softening bridging law is used to describe the metal particle bridging behavior. An int...
متن کاملOn the Complexity of Qualitative Spatial Reasoning: A Maximal Tractable Fragment of the Region Connection Calculus
The computational properties of qualitative spatial reasoning have been investigated to some degree. However, the question for the boundary between polynomial and NP-hard reasoning problems has not been addressed yet. In this paper we explore this boundary in the \Region Connection Calculus" RCC-8. We extend Bennett's encoding of RCC-8 in modal logic. Based on this encoding, we prove that reaso...

The discrete mathematical representations of graph theory, augmented by theorems of matroid theory, were found to have elements and structures isomorphic with those of many different engineering systems. The properties of the mathematical elements of those graphs and the relations between them are then equivalent to knowledge about the engineering system, and are hence termed “embedded knowledg...
